<br />
I hope all of you are posted up at the <span style="font-size: large;">pool</span> enjoying the sunshine, outdoors, and stress-free beauty that is summer. It is <i>well-deserved</i>! There is nothing quite like the feeling of having NOTHING to do. It starts out as amazing-I can clean my house, go to the pool, walk the dogs, read a few books, etc. But then, after 2-3 weeks....reality sets in. I am bored. I <strike>dislike</strike> LOATHE being bored and feeling unproductive. So, I have compiled a list of "things to do" for teachers of the <i>restless</i> variety. You know you all <i>secretly</i> love having the opportunity to spend some quality time just brainstorming creative new ideas for your classroom-even if it is during the summer. I always enjoyed having enough time to COMPLETELY revamp, refresh, and update my classroom. So without further ado:<br />

<br /></div>
<div>
<b>1. Work on a long term curriculum map.</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Evaluate what went well, and what needs revamping from the previous year. There are a plethora of free templates on teachers pay teachers or that you can find by just googling "free long range plan templates". If you are moving to a new grade level or subject area, familiarize yourself with your new curriculum, and begin developing a long range plan for yourself. This WILL HELP you in the long run. I always found that a long range plan would help me remember special units or books that I wanted to use with certain skills.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>2. Create a floor map for rearranging your classroom.</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Tired of the same ole' thing in your classroom? Take measurements of your room, and brainstorm ways to rearrange your class while maintaining an effective flow. There are several online tools that you can use to help you, and an infinite number of classroom photos online to help you form new ideas.</div>

<br /></div>
<div>
<b>3. Create a Reader's and Writer's notebook to use as a model for students.</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Check out my post <a href="http://newmansthirdgrade.blogspot.com/2012/08/readers-and-writers-notebooks.html" target="_blank">HERE</a>. I made these models during the summer, so that they were ready to go during the school year. I also made several extras, so that when new students joined us late in the year, they would be able to use the same type of notebook as their classmates.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>4. Read or Reread The First Days of School or some other motivational/inspirational teacher book.</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Whatever teacher book motivates and inspires you...read it! I reread The First Days of School every year. It helped me reset for the upcoming year, and reminded me that I set the tone and expectation on day one! Another inspirational read is The Freedom Writers Diary. It has been a while since I read this one, but I remember loving it.<br />

<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>5. Create or organize learning centers for use during guided reading.</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This can be EXTREMELY time consuming during the school year. I like for my centers to be very tactile, which means finding a lot of resources. It can be a challenge to change up centers during the school year. To help yourself prepare, think of center ideas during the summer, and gather up materials so that you can have them ready to go! <br />
<br />
Click <a href="http://newmansthirdgrade.blogspot.com/2011/04/literacy-centers.html" target="_blank">HERE</a> to see some ideas for literacy centers that I have used in the past.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>6. Create new procedures posters or rotation charts.</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<i>You know</i> they fade. Just freshen up!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>7. Develop a new integrated unit.</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Have you always wanted to teach fractions and plants together? Go ahead and think through an <b>integrative unit</b> now, so that you are less overwhelmed when the times comes to plan for the unit during the year.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>8. Use Donors Choose to create a project for funding</b>.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I have had many projects funded on Donors Choose, and I posted most of the projects during the summer. It can take a little while to post a project on the site, but once it is there, you don't have to do anything! Also, Sonic does Limeades for Learning during August/September, which is a great time to get your family to enter votes for your existing project for <span style="font-size: large;">FREE</span>.<br />

<br />
I have taken some solid time off from contributing new posts to this blog. Solid, like, a year long. My reason for "stopping" my posts was that I was leaving the classroom, and felt that I would be out of touch with things that were going on, and that teachers would not want to hear from me. As it turns out, that couldn't be farther from the truth. I have decided...it's time for a come back! Cue Darius Rucker come back song: <br />
<div>

<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/ap7HzFlOXq4?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
To refresh your memory...</div>
<div>
Last year I made a decision to leave the classroom when I applied for the <a href="http://www.ncpfp.org/" target="_blank">NC Principal Fellows Program</a>. This decision was extremely hard for me, because I love teaching. Now, after a year of being in my program, I can honestly say that that decision did not become easier with time. There are certain things that I just genuinely miss about teaching and being in my own classroom. Consider this a don't forget to "be thankful" post. <br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Be thankful for your opportunity to carry out a REALLY important life's work. Be thankful for the open, honest conversations that you can have with children. Be thankful for the feeling of accomplishment that you have at the end of each day. Be thankful for your colleagues. Be thankful for those moments when your students tell you how special you are to them. And most importantly, be thankful for the time you have, and the kids that you are privileged to teach.</span><br />
<br />
*Sniff, sniff, tear.*<br />
<br />
Now I know that being out of the classroom can definitely tint my rose colored glasses, but these are some things that I<b> truly</b> came to miss. The hardest times have been holidays and "special" times of year. I cried during the first week of school. Not being there, and feeling like I had lost my purpose was challenging for me. I <i>do not regret</i> my decision to start this program, but it is hard to make such a drastic life change.<br />
<br />
Time for the <strike>silver</strike> gold lining.<br />
<br />
The Principal Fellows Program started for me in late August. Throughout the program, I attended classes twice a week, and worked as a graduate assistant. There were 7 other students in the program with me, and we dove in headfirst to learning what it means to be a school leader, from an administrative standpoint. I have LOVED this program. My professors are all super duper supportive, and my classmates are a joy to work with. Here's a picture of my PF class:<br />
<img height="240" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/t1.0-9/1175462_10101322226120273_1749604946_n.jpg" width="320" /><br />
<br />
If you live in NC, and are considering going to route of school administration, I HIGHLY recommend that you look into the program. As a HUGE part of our course requirements, we complete what is called a Service Leadership Project. Basically, we go to a school of our choice, and collaborate with the Principal to decide on a project that will help us hone our leadership skills, and offer some kind of service to the school. Long story short, my Service Leadership Project was starting an intensive Beginning Teacher Support Program from the 20 beginning teachers at the school I selected. After getting things going with this program I realized that if I thought I was going to be out of touch with teachers and classrooms, I was dead wrong. I spent over 150 hours working on this project: training teachers, observing teachers, and coaching teachers.<br />
<br />
Another exciting element of this program is the opportunity to observe administration at work. I visited about 15 schools, and was able to practice observations, walk-throughs, and participate in meetings with teachers. <br />
<br />
After giving it some thought, I have decided to come back to this blog. While I personally am not teaching in a classroom, I definitely see ALOT of creative, fresh ideas in the classroom, and want to share these ideas with all of you. Hopefully you will welcome me back with open arms;-)<br />
<br />
Have any of you ever made career changes that were challenging? I'd love to hear about your changes-tell me about it in the comments box!</div>

I told all of you yesterday that I am making some pretty significant life changes, and in keeping with that, I have decided to start a new blog, called Life in my Sneakers. It will follow more of my personal life changes and accomplishments since I won't actually be in the classroom anymore. **tears** Please follow me by using the link below to check out what's going on "in my sneakers"!<br />

<br />
It has literally been 7 months since I posted anything...slacker much? Things were just really busy and crazy with school, and I needed to prioritize my time. Unfortunately, that meant blogging took a backseat. When I logged on today, it felt good to find out my followers have almost doubled during my absence! Wow-Thanks to all of you for your support!<br />
<br />
Part of the reason that I have been absent is that I have been in the process of making some life changes-one being that I am leaving the classroom. I decided to pursue a degree in administration, and I will be going back to school for the next 2 years with the North Carolina Principal Fellows Program. This has been a REALLY exciting change for me, but I also find myself sad at the thought that I won't have "my kids" anymore. It's kind of like that bittersweet feeling that you get on the last day of school, but a lot worse! I LOVE teaching, and I will miss it TERRIBLY. But, I think that a degree in school administration is the best decision for my family in the long run, so that is the path I will take. Hopefully, I can work in an elementary school, so that I won't be too far removed from sweet kiddos. I also get time with little ones at church on Sundays, and that helps!<br />
<br />
There have been a few other changes and events in my life too-Here are the last 7 months in a flash!<br />

But, I feel ahead of the game because my math games for February are all made and ready! (and my house is clean!!!) I created a Valentine's Day Math Centers packet that is for sale on TPT for only $4! Check it out! The games review the topics of multiplication, multiplication and division fact families, rounding, and telling time. Anyway, I hope that your break was wonderful and that you did <i>NO</i> work, like I wish I could have!<br />

And no, it is not summer break! I actually enjoy Christmas break a LOT more than summer break, for quite a few reasons:<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1. I only need about <span style="font-size: large;">2 weeks</span> to regenerate....<span style="font-size: large;">2 months leads to boredom and unnecessary spending</span>.</div>
<div>
2. Time with <span style="font-size: large;">family</span></div>
<div>
3. My <span style="font-size: large;">husband</span> is off work for a few days</div>
<div>
4. Fun <span style="font-size: large;">dresses</span> for parties</div>
<div>
5. <span style="font-size: large;"> Pea Coats</span></div>
<div>
6. <span style="font-size: large;"> Presents</span>: hubby's birthday, our anniversary, and Christmas</div>
<div>
7. The crazy chance that there COULD MAYBE be a <span style="font-size: large;">dusting of snow</span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Need I say more? Christmas break is just my favorite! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Over the past couple of weeks I have been doing a lot of super fun different Christmas activities from my classroom, and unfortunately, have not had a camera to capture every moment...<span style="font-size: large;">blah</span>. That being said, here is the recap of Christmas in 3rd grade <span style="font-size: large;">using pictures from the actual creators of the ideas</span>! Click the link below each picture to visit the website from where I got my idea!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Grinch Day!!</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I decided this year to give "Grinch Day" a try, and it actually ended up being more of "Grinch Week". I had to spread out the activities so that I could spend an adequate amount of time on each one!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Math-3rd grade is currently working on multi-step problem solving (I know you feel my pain here...), and it is so hard!! I chose to use a homemade powerpoint using Grinch themed questions and images to help motivate. The kids thought it was a hoot! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Reading- We started out with a lesson on character traits, and I took this idea from <a href="http://teachinginhighheels.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Teaching in High Heels</a>. First, you read aloud the book How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and then you work as a class to come up with character traits to describe the Grinch. In the idea online, she used adjectives:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img alt="Grinch adjectives" height="200" src="http://media-cache-ec5.pinterest.com/upload/236016836691548421_vqtBlhxB_c.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="158" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://teachinginhighheels.blogspot.com/">http://teachinginhighheels.blogspot.com/</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The next day, we had a mini-lesson on similes and metaphors from the song "You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch". LOVED this activity!! That song is full of metaphors, with a few similes too! The students had a paper copy with the lyrics from the song, and had to highlight the similes and metaphors in two different colors of highlighters. Then, each kids wrote an acrostic poem using the letters GRINCH, and writing similes to make up the poem. They had a great time with this, too! We also made paper grinches to go along with the poem. In case you need a refresher:<br />
<div>
<br /></div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
On the last day of school, we had Grinch punch, which is just sprite, vanilla ice cream, food coloring, and some green sprinkles, and also we made Christmas trees from Whoville, which were sugar cones, white icing, made green with food coloring, and small candies for the ornaments. We enjoyed all of this while watching the cartoon version of the movie.<br />

We also spent some time doing holiday writing, using apple cinnamon ornaments and The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg as inspiration. The kids always enjoy these activities. <br />
It's been a hot second since I posted last. I know you all feel the pain. It seems like no matter how prepared you THINK you are during the summer, there is a massive amount of catching up to be done as soon as school starts back. But, the good news is that I have a fantabulous group of kids this year, and it has been nothing but fun to head into work every day. <br />
<br />
This week, our focus reading skill is sequencing, and today we were doing some sequencing with nonfiction work. Integration is being pushed big time at school, so we first visited a website to learn about Neil Armstrong and the first space visit. After that, we made one large timeline as a class. I was pleasantly surprised at how well my kids delegated tasks! Here are a few pictures from the lesson:<br />
<br />

Back to school time!! In preparation, I have been using pinterest for my own personal professional development:) Sometimes I think maybe looking at pictures of other people's classrooms and ideas can be just as useful as actual professional development! Just maybe;)<br />
<br />
Anyway, I was inspired after seeing a couple of classroom posters: one for reading book nooks, and one for writing rubrics. I am sticking with my "free is for me" theory in preparation for the school year, so I didn't buy any new posterboard, even though colored posters would definitely be cuter:)<br />

Now, let me say that these are COMPLETELY copied from pinterest. I mean, right down to the stories that are on the writing rubric. But, I made my own version, so I figured I would share it with my followers anyway. Here are a few more pictures, up close. Have you taken on any pinterest projects for this upcoming school year?</div>newmanmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16658995622268427649noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2249292002536353857.post-85896947060559168702012-08-09T12:34:00.000-07:002012-08-09T12:34:42.663-07:00Reader's and Writer's NotebooksHello and Welcome to AUGUST!!<br />
<br />
Can you believe it is already August!? Where did the last 2 months go!? I don't know about all of you, but while I love summertime, I am secretly excited about getting back into the swing of things. Shhh....don't tell. <br />
<br />
Anyway, in preparation for next year, I spent some time making sample Reader's and Writer's notebooks for my kids to see before the make their own this year. And, for your viewing pleasure, I have included a step by step guide for you! **Also, in keeping with my "save money" theory that I am trying to stick with this year, all of the materials that I used were scrounged up in my classroom and at home. <br />
<br />
Step 1: Start out with a marble notebook, construction paper, scissors, marker, glue, and tape. I ask my kids to bring in marble notebooks, but a notebook with rings would be fine too:)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhuFOsRb0Qvh84YOm9_lfYsBtaPV3RV2NmP2tiawIQQel6PvWHMrIhd-pO9z-finpMq6is6OBae_xfkA9MrREEXVu6gQeNmo5c5ZJ9V8WFvvVchhO7JFEOLcjTnxnulKFvB-Jrby_sf79S/s1600/DSC04299.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" kda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhuFOsRb0Qvh84YOm9_lfYsBtaPV3RV2NmP2tiawIQQel6PvWHMrIhd-pO9z-finpMq6is6OBae_xfkA9MrREEXVu6gQeNmo5c5ZJ9V8WFvvVchhO7JFEOLcjTnxnulKFvB-Jrby_sf79S/s400/DSC04299.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
Step 2: Decide how you would like your students to divide their notebooks. I decided for my reading notebook, that I would have 4 sections: Notes (10 pages), Class Work (30 pages), My Reading (30 pages), and Guided Reading (30 pages). You should know this in advance so that you do not allot too many pages to any one section. <br />
<br />
Cut the construction paper to fit the size of the pages in the notebook. Fold that page to make 2 triangles. They will not "line up".<br />
<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Step 3: Cut the paper into 2 triangles. You will need to do this for as many dividers as you want to have. I have 4 triangles, which took two sheets of construction paper.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div align="left">
Step 4: Label the construction paper with the headings that you would like them to have. I used red marker to match the red front of my notebook, and I chose to have all of the dividers look the same, to make the notebook more cohesive.</div>
<div align="left">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Step 5: Glue the pages down only around the two edges that are on the sides of the notebook. (This will be the two sides which make a right triange.) I also used tape to reinforce. The construction paper should make a pocket on the page.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">You can see the tape on the side of the page. This will help ensure the construction paper does not fall out or peel up.</td></tr>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This is how the paper will serve as a pocket.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Step 6: Repeat the steps for the remainder of the pages in the notebook. Use the extra construction paper to create a title for the front of the notebook. I chose for my title to match the rest of the dividers in the notebook.</div>

<br /></div>
<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div align="left" style="text-align: left;">
**For my writing notebook, I followed the same process. I chose to have 3 sections in the writing notebook: Notes (10 pages), Writing (All pages in the middle of the notebook), and Words (the last 4 pages). I used a word wall template on the last four pages for students to record new vocabulary and tricky words to use as a reference when they are writing. There are pictures of the Writer's Notebook below.</div>

Let me give you a little background about this room. It is part of a VERY old building. Like, built in the 1960's old. So, while I am SO thankful for all of the space that I have, most of the stuff in the room is outdated and oldddddd. <br />
<br />
Back to the shopping....mom and I decided to hit up the fabric store, and things just took flight! I decided to buy enough fabric and ribbon to wrap 2 of my tables. Here is a picture of my room before. The table with the computers on it and the horseshoe table to the right will be covered.<br />
<br />
**Please ignore the "summer clutter".<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here are the steps I took to prepare the fabric for the tables:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Step 1: You will need fabric (measured to fit around the side of the table), scissors, a glue gun, ribbon, and a ruler.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Notes: You may have noticed that the top border ribbon is missing from the "after" picture. Unfortunately, I mismeasured the cloth, and had to velcro the fabric below the ribbon. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For the second table, pictured below, I waited until the fabric was on the table before I attached the ribbon, and then only attached the ribbon to the top of the fabric, instead of the bottom so that you could see it better. I also added bows to the second table. And of course, I had to have one table themed for my alma mater:)</div>

What are you looking forward to this fall??</div>newmanmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16658995622268427649noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2249292002536353857.post-45486393811416512342012-07-26T05:14:00.000-07:002012-07-26T05:14:09.813-07:00Reader's Notebook Book Box ProjectGood Morning Bloggies!<br />
<br />
This year, I have decided that I want to get more organized with my reader's notebooks that my kids are using. In the past, they have kept their notebooks in their desks, but I am sure you all know that notebooks get torn up and lost so easily that way. I have been perusing the web, and have seen lots of magazine boxes and plastic bins being used to hold the reader's notebooks, and that is the route I decided to take.<br />
<br />
Problem.<br />
<br />
I cannot afford to buy 25 plastic bins for my kids. Now I know there are cheap options, and I also know that a dollar goes a long way at the dollar tree. But, I just wanted to make this happen for FREE. <br />
<br />
like, totally free<br />
<br />
Cue Homemade Reader's Notebook Book Box Project! I have been saving up cereal boxes, and the kids are I are going to personalize our own book boxes next year. Last night, I created my own "sample" book box to show the kids (and you) how to make them!<br />
<br />
Step 1: Scrounge up magazines, pictures, a cereal box, modge podge and a paint brush, construction paper, scissors, glue sticks, and markers. I used washable markers, and ended up wishing I had gone with Sharpies or other permanent versions.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjraTORow1WsRQ9XbivpssN3lkuuFSEBYGCGAVS0tqpUWiMdXgEwWoqK12idkVjU6LGuvugDpgFDfovf8fn894Q0geOe88ZOEZtz5HeGJgazWohF4eeVYBw7aQpj1eFEKAav6TmvnLpxTP-/s1600/DSC04265.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" sda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjraTORow1WsRQ9XbivpssN3lkuuFSEBYGCGAVS0tqpUWiMdXgEwWoqK12idkVjU6LGuvugDpgFDfovf8fn894Q0geOe88ZOEZtz5HeGJgazWohF4eeVYBw7aQpj1eFEKAav6TmvnLpxTP-/s320/DSC04265.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div align="left">
Step 2: Cut down your cereal box to the shape of a magazine holder.</div>
<div align="left">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg23h8omlF8efE_MUxbRrU-8xiVJmzL9mFAmMpmnq1ivMmvwWSrTejq4tTylaolR14TvkvPw4sPW7HtjueFX4vCnFRLOqTlmc676HI11MyhKBaswvF_f3eAAPIIKfbUZ8o9hpLBOFeMoyK/s1600/DSC04267.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" sda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg23h8omlF8efE_MUxbRrU-8xiVJmzL9mFAmMpmnq1ivMmvwWSrTejq4tTylaolR14TvkvPw4sPW7HtjueFX4vCnFRLOqTlmc676HI11MyhKBaswvF_f3eAAPIIKfbUZ8o9hpLBOFeMoyK/s320/DSC04267.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Step 3: Cut out pictures from magazines and select personal photos to glue to the box.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiS8R8nUy4nM6_r69qYUqUxO3OewwRomjXCShCWkuUDm5PVsc09SRIdkVkru-BmSkcN9gTUv_REmoGoj859vBlp5YEdcb7Ea8u8uaMKKD2P7JfbloJ0aEdBSy2UVZXAOF3v1sxNU_Z2-jY7/s1600/DSC04268.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" sda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiS8R8nUy4nM6_r69qYUqUxO3OewwRomjXCShCWkuUDm5PVsc09SRIdkVkru-BmSkcN9gTUv_REmoGoj859vBlp5YEdcb7Ea8u8uaMKKD2P7JfbloJ0aEdBSy2UVZXAOF3v1sxNU_Z2-jY7/s320/DSC04268.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Step 4: Use glue sticks to stick all of the pictures on the box, and trim the pictures so that they are not sticking off the sides of the box.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMXz1iOhJTQNICB3ufNYn6MHMmfEhaZiBFa0Zv0ig5-DmFwfHbiR0iFd9Kni6NIAXUJaFn3ouS84ySaP4AsoeksL1tf7qXvbne8tzldREYq8pzUhZ804pICWIVpcWMAMkNSAM21QLOkgBS/s1600/DSC04271.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" sda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMXz1iOhJTQNICB3ufNYn6MHMmfEhaZiBFa0Zv0ig5-DmFwfHbiR0iFd9Kni6NIAXUJaFn3ouS84ySaP4AsoeksL1tf7qXvbne8tzldREYq8pzUhZ804pICWIVpcWMAMkNSAM21QLOkgBS/s320/DSC04271.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Step 5: Make cutesy word labels to describes the reason for choosing the pictures you chose. Ex: I wrote "run" and stuck it by the running pictures because I enjoy running. You could certainly tie an inference lesson into this part of the craft. Students could ask others use their box to infer their interests!<br />
<br />

You all know what I am talking about.....you go to any given store, and BAM! You get hit with the school supply display. There is no wake up call to remind you of the ending of summer quite like this. If you are like me, at first you think..."Oooo, new crayons!!" which is almost immediately followed by "OMG I only have a few weeks left of my vacation!"<br />
<br />
That being said, upon seeing the crayons and other goodies, I went home and started preparing my materials that I had already purchased for next year. One project I have decided to do this year is create table skirts for all of my large tables in my room (pictures to come soon!) Well, the table skirts turned out so cute that I could NOT WAIT to put them on the tables, like, not even a day. Sooooo, off I go to school the next morning to put my cute creation into it's new home. <br />
<br />
Fail.<br />
Flop.<br />
Maybe Next Time.<br />
<br />
Wouldn't you know they are waxing the floors in the hallway. <br />
<br />
That being said, I guess my cutesy makeover pictures will have to wait a little while. **Sigh**<br />
<br />
On a happier note, Antoinette and Emily over at <a href="http://4321teach.blogspot.com/2012/07/two-awards-in-one-day-yeah.html" target="_blank">4321...Teach</a> have been so sweet to give me the Versatile Blogger Award! Listening- Good Morning America!<br />
<br />
I don't know about all of you, but one of my favorite things about being out for summer is watching the "mid morning" TV shows. I like to immediately follow GMA with Live! with Kelly:)<br />

Loving-Brownie Batter Oats<br />
<br />
Please RUN over to <a href="http://www.fitfoodiefinds.com/">http://www.fitfoodiefinds.com/</a> and check out what Lee has going on. She has amazing healthy recipes, one of which is brownie batter oats. I am an oat eater. Like, every day. But she has some incredible ways to change up your oats in a healthy way. There are lots of other healthly recipes and ideas too. And, her active lifestyle is just downright inspirational!<br />

These two go hand in hand! Next weekend, I am running the XTERRA trail run half marathon in Columbia SC. Therefore, my feet are in bad shape! Pedicure could really go under the "needing" category. Nobody wants to see piggies like these. While training for this half, I have been wearing my regular sunglasses that I wear all the time. No big thing really, but they give me a headache if I wear them on runs longer than 6 miles! These are what I am thinking I need:</div>

For professional development, I am diving into this book by Fountas and Pinnell. I am going to be changing my reading instruction next year. I really want to try readers and writers workshop, but I am so nervous. So, basically, I am a sponge while reading this! Any tips and advice you bloggies have about implementing reader's workshop would be GREATLY appreciated!!</div>

<br />
Our state has adopted the common core! I am, as I am sure many of my other co-workers are, SO excited about adopting these new standards! I have really enjoyed examining the changes in curriculum. In the same breath, I am SO nervous about new expectations! I am sure that everything will be fine, but our lack of core aligned resources has me sweating a little bit! <br />
<br />
That being said, I have created some <a href="http://www.corestandards.org/" target="_blank">common core objectives</a> to display in my classroom. Click the picture below to check in out at <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/3rd-Grade-Common-Core-Standards" target="_blank">TPT</a>!<br />

I am <em>dying</em> to hear from all of you that are familiar with the common core. What challenges did you face when you switched over? What are the benefits that you have seen? <br />
<br />
That's all for that! I'm out to stay cool by the pool!newmanmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16658995622268427649noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2249292002536353857.post-51420531359395275462012-05-31T16:17:00.001-07:002012-05-31T16:19:28.309-07:00Don't get Crabby!! 5 more days of school!!Hello bloggers!<br />
<br />
I don't know how far along you are in the year, but we are down to 5 sweet little days!! Now, I love my job but holy wow am I excited for summer!!<br />
<br />
These last two week can get really tricky to plan. EOG testing is over, but now we have to remediate the students who did not pass the test, continue teaching the students who did, and retest the students who didn't. It can be overwhelming planning for kids that you do not normally teach. I am the teacher from our grade level who has been working with the students who passed their EOG reading test. I can honestly say that I have loved working with this group! <br />
<br />
I decided to go with an "oceans" theme, with summer being right around the corner, and figured I would share what we have been up to!<br />
<br />

So anyway, the reason behind the title of my post: It can be tough not to turn into a crab at the end of the year. But, if I can stay positive and make the last few days as fun as possible, I think the kids will in turn make it a little easier on me:)</div>

<br />
Well.....the week is here. The culmination of everything that I do has been crammed into one long test, and it is here. I am sure you can all sense how truly "excited" I am that testing is going on out in rural land where I teach. Unfortunately, one of the "perks" of working with third graders is the dreaded EOG. My kids have been working SO hard on their tests, and I am very proud of them!<br />
<br />
Now that I have had some time on the soapbox, I wanted to share a few motivational things that I did for my kids each morning before their test. I wish that I could say that I came up with these ideas all on my own and made the printables all on my own, but I totally didn't :) To see the real creative genious behind these cutsie ideas, follow the links!<br />

Please envision the airhead that was taped to the letter before the kids gobbled it up:) They were so surprised and excited to see their treat! I got the idea from<a href="http://adventuresofmssmith.blogspot.com/2012/04/testing-motivation-airheads.html" target="_blank"> Adventures of Ms. Smith</a>. She has a SUPER cute blog!! <br />

To all testing teachers-I hope you are having a stress free experience! Ciao for now!!newmanmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16658995622268427649noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2249292002536353857.post-29130108931674772682012-05-13T15:33:00.001-07:002012-05-13T15:33:52.048-07:00Holy long time no blog!!!Hello blog world!! I feel like I have not had a single second to get online and get blogging since idkkkkk January? (January 9th to be exact:))<br />
<br />
The main reason for this is my stress load at school. This is only my 3rd year teaching, so I only have two other groups of students to compare them too, but this group of kids is demanding a lot of my time. I have definitely had to learn a lot about differentiated instruction this year, that is for sure! Not to mention all those little 3 letter acronyms that consume most of my time at home. IEP, PEP, EOG, PLC......you get the drift. Anddd to top it all of NC is going over to the common core, which is a good thing, but is something that I am going to have to learn about.<br />
<br />
The second reason for my leave of absence has been that my BESTIE was getting married!!! And, being the matron of honor, I had a LOT of matronly duties to attend to:)<br />
<br />

I've been wondering:<br />
<br />
**How did changing to the common core make teaching different for you?<br />
<br />
**How do you find it easiest to differentiate instruction??<br />newmanmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16658995622268427649noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2249292002536353857.post-77392368884001788152012-01-09T16:55:00.000-08:002012-01-09T16:55:50.837-08:00Valentines Day Monster Unit and Linky!Head over to <a href="http://ohboy3rdgrade.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Oh' Boy Fourth Grade</a> and link up!<br />

Happy (almost) New Year! To ring in the new year, I want to share an activity that I have done with my kids for the past two years. It is a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Project that we do at the completion of the CATCF novel. The project covers the topics of summarization, letter writing, descriptive narratives, and adjectives. I would love to share my template and directions with you if you are interested in the project. STEP 1: Follow my blog, and STEP 2: leave a comment with your email address. Once you have done that your CATCF freebie will be on it's way! The kids LOVE making these characters, and they always turn out so darn cute! Here are a few pics of our projects!<br />

When we got home I was perusing through old pictures, and what should I find but a video of us back at cheerleading practice! (My husband and I met on a college cheer team-GO PIRATES!) Anyway-have a chuckle for yourself!<br />

Anyway-at school this past week we dug into the vivid vocabulary from the Polar Express! So far so good! My kids and I are pushing through these last couple of weeks until Christmas, and I am sure that you are too! I am taking the whole Elf on the Shelf thing really seriously:) If you are interested in my Polar Express Unit, check it out here! There is still time to do the unit before Christmas! <br />

I'll be posting my own pictures and recipe next week, but if you want to try it with your own kiddos, I found a great blog about it called 5 orange potatoes. <div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: center;">Have a fabulous week!</div>newmanmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16658995622268427649noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2249292002536353857.post-87378406125791128992011-11-26T21:07:00.000-08:002011-11-26T21:07:54.743-08:00Girl's Night, Thanksgiving, and Polar Express!I hope you all had a fabulous Thanksgiving! Now we are in the home stretch until Christmas break! I would first of all like to say how relaxing it is to get to visit with family and friends during long breaks from school. I was so blessed to spend my weekend before Thanksgiving with a close friend that I used to teach with. It was motivating to talk to someone who shares a positive attitude about our kids and their potential in meeting their end of the year goals in reference to testing.....and have a couple of glasses of vino:) Add to that a 6 day weekend with family in FL, and voila! Relaxed and ready to go!<br />
<br />
I have posted a new product on <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/The-Polar-Express-Writing-Unit">Teachers Pay Teachers</a> that I will be using with my third graders in the weeks leading up to Christmas break. It is a Polar Express Writing Unit, and is a BLAST!! There are so many great options for using The Polar Express in the Classroom, but I absolutely LOVE using it for writing! Check it out <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/The-Polar-Express-Writing-Unit">HERE</a>: <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/The-Polar-Express-Writing-Unit">THE POLAR EXPRESS WRITING UNIT</a><br />
<br />
Also, here are a few pics of things that we did during Thanksgiving. The newspapers and paper plates were used in a budgeting lesson teaching kids how to plan for and budget for Thanksgiving dinner. Whew! That was a toughie, but definitely an eye-opener for my students! (Think: What do you mean the turkey cost $20???) Priceless! It is amazing the street smarts that come out during lessons like that too! (Think: I am going to get green beans in a can, since they are cheaper.) I hope you all had success teaching Thanksgiving to your kiddos too! <br />
