4th of July Linky Party!

Happy 4th of July!  So excited for a linky party!  Currently.....

Listening- Good Morning America!

I don't know about all of you, but one of my favorite things about being out for summer is watching the "mid morning" TV shows. I like to immediately follow GMA with Live! with Kelly:)

Loving-Brownie Batter Oats

Please RUN over to http://www.fitfoodiefinds.com/ and check out what Lee has going on.  She has amazing healthy recipes, one of which is brownie batter oats.  I am an oat eater.  Like, every day.  But she has some incredible ways to change up your oats in a healthy way.  There are lots of other healthly recipes and ideas too.  And, her active lifestyle is just downright inspirational!

Thinking-Time to walk the dogs?  My dogs are really digging summer vacation because they get to walk twice a day!  And they get to stay out and play all day too! Prepare for doggy overload....

Zoey after a morning run:)  Tired pup!

Jax doing his "treat trick"!

Both of my babies on watch!  Making sure no one sneaks up on the house!

Wanting-A pedicure
Needing-Oakley running sunglasses

These two go hand in hand!  Next weekend, I am running the XTERRA trail run half marathon in Columbia SC.  Therefore, my feet are in bad shape!  Pedicure could really go under the "needing" category. Nobody wants to see piggies like these. While training for this half, I have been wearing my regular sunglasses that I wear all the time.  No big thing really, but they give me a headache if I wear them on runs longer than 6 miles!  These are what I am thinking I need:

Oakley Miss Conduct Sunglasses

Reading:

1.  Les Miserable
2.  Guiding Readers and Writers in Grades 3-6

Les Mis is my pleasure read of the summer. Read aloud...not so much.  I have read it before, but it has been a while, and I am loving it!  BTW have you seen the trailer for the new movie??

If I had to pick an actual read aloud that i use with my kids that is my favorite, it would have to be The Sweetest Fig by Chris Van Allsburg:)  The kids get such a kick out of this!

For professional development, I am diving into this book by Fountas and Pinnell.  I am going to be changing my reading instruction next year.  I really want to try readers and writers workshop, but I am so nervous.  So, basically, I am a sponge while reading this!  Any tips and advice you bloggies have about implementing reader's workshop would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Please head over to Oh Boy 4th Grade and check out all of the other linkies!!!

HAPPY 4th EVERYONE!!!

  1. Love your Currently! Good luck in your half marathon...I think the most I can run is a 5k, so more power to you - you deserve a pedicure :) Love all the books you listed too! I am thinking about switching my reading/writing format to a workshop as well, so you'll have to let me know if you learn anything helpful!! Happy 4th!

    1. I will definitely let you know about the success of readers and writers workshop. I am so nervous to "redo" the way that I teach, but I am sure that it will be great!

  2. WOW! half-marathon... I can only run about 6km. I think I should buy those running glasses to get me motivated to train during summer. :)
    I am following you!
    Nice currently!

  3. The school district I student taught in used readers and writers workshop almost exclusively. It always feels like there's so much going on at one time, but it definitely works. A lot of it seemed to come down to kids really knowing the routines and expectations so you can conference and do guided reading groups without getting constantly interupted. That being said, I've never tried implementing it on my own so I'm excited to hear how that goes for you. Best of luck with the half marathon. Sounds like fun!

  4. Love your blog! I am a fan of Fountas and Pinnell too. I don't do as much with Reading Workshop anymore, and I miss it. Hopefully the Common Core switch will allow me more time to do it.

I am giving you the One Lovely Blog award-be sure to stop by my site and check it out!

  5. I wanted to say thank you for the shout out about my blog, and your kind words. You included me in a great group of other bloggers!

I can respond to your request for tips and advice about readers workshop. The Fountas and Pinnell book you are about to read is a great resource. Follow the part referred to as the first 30 days. They give awesome material for charts, other lists and organization material.

When we first started the workshop model, many teachers had trouble wrapping their heads around teaching mini lessons (about 15 min.). Now we know this is where great learning takes place. I love gathering my sweet 3rd graders on the carpet around me for the mini lessons. It is absolutely amazing how much better they pay attention. (So much so that I implemented the workshop model to math and other subject matter where possible.) Kids this age need to make an ajustment in their activity about every 15 or 20 minutes.

For the first few days, I don't meet with reading groups. Instead I walk around during the independent/partner reading portions, with the purpose of getting students in just right books and setting up routines and partner groups. (My partners read all around the room.) Once I see that students can follow routines for getting started and stay on task, I begin pulling my first group (for about 20 min.). Then I get up and monitor the parnter and independent reading before calling another group. This is also when kids can approach me with any questions. They know they must not interrupt our small group time.

I will be blogging on this topic soon. Follow me and it'll show up on your sidebar, then you can hop on over. Good luck implementing the workshop model this year. Once you get the routines down, I'm sure you will love it! I'll be glad to answer any questions you may have.

  6. Hi! I just found your blog on Pinterest. I am also reading the Guided Readers and Writers book by Fountas 7 Pinnell. It's very overwhelming for me, too. It's a lot to take in and think about implementing. I tried a variation of reader's and writer's workshop in my classroom last year, but want to do a more "true" version of it this year. This will be my 3rd year teaching and so I feel better about implementing more of it. I wish I had more teachers in my area that were reading the book and desiring to do this in their classroom. It's become one of my favorite teaching books.
Enjoy the rest of your summer and I look forward to following your blog.
    Sincerely,
    Megan
